Is Massage Therapy for You?


Wondering if massage therapy is the right career for you? Try a mini-course!


National University of Health Sciences has a developed a special four-evening course called “Introduction to Massage.” It’s designed to give you an overview of massage therapy and some hands-on experience so you can see if it might be the right profession for you.


In four convenient evening classes, you can learn fundamental principles and hands-on techniques that you can use to give a great massage to friends and loved ones. You’ll also be receiving massage and experiencing its benefits first-hand.


You’ll also learn what it takes to start a career as a massage therapist. In addition to a number of techniques, you'll tap into the anatomy, ethical and legal issues, hygiene, table management, and terminology that licensed professionals need to know. During the final class, you will be required to complete a written assessment of course concepts as well as a practical evaluation of massage technique.


The best thing about “Introduction to Massage” is that there’s nothing to lose!  If you decide massage just isn’t the right career track for you, you’ll still come away with some great skills to offer a soothing massage to family and friends.


If you really enjoy it and decide you’d like to continue your massage education, you’ve made the first step toward a new vocation. “Introduction to Massage” is a mandatory requirement for entry into our MT certificate or AAS degree program. By passing the course, you’ll be able to waive the standard application fee, but you’ll still need to fill out additional admission forms for entry into the full program.


The class lasts for two weeks and consists of two evening classes per week from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Cost is $90. The course will be held on the following dates:

  2. Monday, May 12; Thursday, May 15; Monday, May 19; Monday, May 22

  3. Monday, June 16; Thursday, June 19; Monday, June 23; Thursday, June 26

  4. Monday, July 7; Thursday, July 10; Monday, July 14; Thursday, July 17

  5. Monday, July 28; Thursday July 31; Monday, August 4; Thursday, August 7

  6. Monday, August 11; Thursday August 14; Monday, August 18; Thursday, August 21


To enroll, you must be 18 years of age and have sufficient vision, hearing, touch, strength, and coordination to perform requirements of the course.

Interesting Facts

Several grade schools in the United Kingdom are using massage on young children to improve concentration and reduce bullying. The Massage in Schools Program was implemented in December 2000. Peer massage is a program where children are trained to give each other a basic massage on the head, back, and arms. Massages are fully clothed and last about 10 minutes.


Some schools include peer massage as part of their anti-bullying program. Having the children massage each other improves social skills, teaches respectful touch, increases attention span, and directs excess energy to a productive activity.
